That’s right…no fear here, only excitement. That is how you should feel! Wanting to be in dancesport and a professional ballroom dancer can have its anxious and even scary moments. But all in all, you studied and practiced dance, perfecting every dance move, so you could go out there and let the people see you. True, you will be judged by others on your expertise, and that is part of the challenge. You can do it, and I’m going to help you be “fearless” and not fearful by reminding you just how lucky you are. You are actually poised for success whether you know it or not.
First of all, you are surrounded by your peers when you are performing. Everything you are feeling, your fellow dancers around you are experiencing too. You are in great company and in that way you are all equal. There’s a slight comfort zone there even though your peers are your competition. It’s just nice to know that what you’re going through, they are too. You also have the viability to make friends, learn what competition is all about and hopefully come away with a greater understanding of what you are trying to achieve. Of course, you have to beat every single last one of them to come out on top, but it is a good feeling to know you generally have people around you that share your interests.
Just by virtue of how you get to dance in front of a crowd to cheer you on is pretty awesome in itself and you get to do it all dressed up looking terrific! All you have to do is perform and enjoy yourself. How many people can say, they are one of the “chosen” ones, or the only one in their whole dance class that is going to competition. We call people like that, the crème de la crème, or simply “the best.”
Here’s another thing that should make you feel more confident. You have constant support from someone who has your back. That would be your dance partner. Your partner is with you all the way. In fact, your partner may even be able to cover up an error you might make, and no one would ever notice. You’re out there dancing moves that take time to learn and involve precision. You only keep getting better all the time because you have a partner that cares, shares and depends on you. Wow, have I convinced you yet, how cool you really are? You are needed and that is one of the best feelings in the world!
You are creating excitement around you and that is contagious. That’s what dance does! It takes a lot of good energy and great skill to do what you do, but you can do it and it is worth every effort. So forget your nerves, transfix yourself into your dancing and enjoy the music as it plays, get into it. How can you move, groove, smile and still feel scared – you can’t. And that is how you turn fear into fearless!
Have fun out there,
