History of the Foundation

Mission and Purpose

The Fordney Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2002 to support amateur youth and young adult ballroom dancers, typically between the ages of 6 and 25. The foundation's primary objectives include:

  • Artistic Expression: Helping children and young adults realize their dreams through the art of ballroom dance.

  • Professional Development: Discovering and training talented individuals with the goal of establishing professional careers in dance-related fields.

  • Community Education: Developing an understanding of "DanceSport" as a recognized sport and art form within the community.

  • Accessibility: Providing financial support to young people who wish to compete but may lack the necessary resources for costumes, coaching, and travel.

Core Programs and Sponsorships

Historically, the foundation has focused its efforts on several key initiatives:

  • Junior and Youth DanceSport Series: A points-based series involving nearly 100 ballroom dance competitions across the U.S. and Canada.

  • The DREAM Program: An acronym for Discover, Respect, Express, Achieve, Motivate, this program was created specifically for 4th through 12th-grade students in Southern California.

  • Educational Scholarships: Sponsorship of the annual Brigham Young University (BYU) Dance Scholarship Award since 2007.

Benefits of DanceSport

Ballroom dance offers significant physical and psychological advantages, including:

  • Physical Conditioning: Improved coordination, stamina, flexibility, and agility.

  • Social and Life Skills: Better communication skills, social interaction, and elevated self-esteem.

  • Discipline: Learning fundamental etiquette and the rigorous training required to master musical rhythm and form.
